The list of nominees for the 60th Edition of the 2018 Grammy Awards has been released. Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar have been mentioned quite a few times due to their nominations, those being snubbed have gotten their own buzz as well. Let’s buzz about Africa at the 2018 Grammy Awards.
Tinariwen means “The Deserts” in the Touareg language. It is a music group from Tessalit, a region located on the northern side of Mali. Their music is called “assouf” which means solitude. The band was formed in 1979
Tinariwen has won a Grammy back in 2012 for Best World Music Album for the album “Tassili”. The group is nominated yet again for Best World Music Album at the 2018 Grammy ” Elwan”.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
Ladysmith Black Mambazo – is a South African vocal group founded in 1960 by Joseph Shabalala. It is well known for its “acapella” performances.
The group has been nominated for a total of ten (10) Grammys throughout the years in different categories such as Best Traditional World Music Album and Best Traditional Folk Album. The band won four (4) Grammys is 2014, 2009, 2005 and 1988. And for the 60th edition it has been nominated in two (2) categories: Best World Music Album Shaka Zulu Revisited 3 and Best Children’s Album for the album Songs of Peace & Love
“Shaka Zulu Revisited:3″ is the remastered version of the album “Shaka Zulu” that won the Grammy back in 1988 for Best Traditional Folk Album. The 2018 edition is also special for the group as it is their first nomination outside of the Best World/Traditional Album categories.
The album Bobo Yéyé, Belle Epoque En Haute Volta has been nominated in two categories: Best Historical Album and Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package. The album is a 3-disc set composed of thirty-seven (37) songs that comes with a one hundred forty-four (144) pages book of black and white pictures of the bands and fans. It is a mixture of diverse songs from different artists.
Lost Somali Tapes
The Sweet As Broken Dates: Lost Somali Tapes From The Horn Of Africa is another compilation of songs from the 1970s and 1980s from Somalia. It is a fifteen-track album produced and compiled by Vil Sohonie and Nicolas Sheikholeslami and is nominated in the Best Historical Album category.
Mariam Makeba is South African an ethno-jazz singer. She is sometimes referred to as ‘Mama Afrika”. Her full name is Zenzile Makeba Qgwashu Nguvama.
She has been nominated nine (9) times and has 1 win under her belt throughout the years. This time she will be competing in the Best Music Video with “Makeba” produced and released by Jain.
