Somalia – Fighters of militant Islamist group Al-Shabab stoned a woman in the Lower Shabelle region of Somalia to death. She was found guilty of being married to 11 men. Al-Shabab, an Islamist group based in Somalia, stoned Wednesday a woman accused of polygamy, reported the group’s radio agency, Andalus.
A mother of eight, she had been arrested after an argument erupted between two men about her, both claiming to be her lawful husband. After her arrest, several other men had introduced themselves as her husband.
According to the shabab of the community « One of them had died, another divorced her but nine others were still married« .
A Sablale district court in the Lower Shabelle region – led by the militant group – sentenced Shukri Abdullahi, 30, who married 11 men without a divorce. The self-styled judge said the woman had confessed to polygamy charges.
In front of the residents who served as witnesses, she was buried to the neck in a public square before masked Al-Shabab fighters bombarded her with stones.
Affiliated with al-Qaida terrorist network, al-Shabaab is seeking to establish an Islamic state in Somalia, fighting to impose its own severe interpretation of Islamic law. The courts set up by this group do not allow for legal representation or appeal.
Activists often execute suspected spies and accuse adulterers, with stoning as a form of execution. Several men and women have already been victims of these stonings.
Polygamy is more common among men in Somalia, who may have up to four women. However, women have sometimes taken a second husband without an official divorce, often for economic reasons.
