Indonesia – Three attacks broke out on Sunday, May 13 in Indonesia more precisely in the city of Surabaya a city located in the east of the island of Java. The suicide attacks on the three churches were claimed by the Islamic State (IS) and were perpetrated by six members of the same family.
The attacks occurred during the morning Mass started around 7:30 am (local time).
According to Tito Karnavian, Head of the National Police, the perpetrators are believed to be from a family of six (6) people, connected to the group Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) which supports the Islamic State. The mother, father, two girls aged 9 and 12 and two sons aged 16 and 18 all participated in the attacks.
The Kristen church was attacked by the two girls and their mother who was identified as Puji Kuswati. According to the Chief of Police, they entered the church covered with niqabs and carrying bombs at the waist. Once inside, they exploded.
St. Mary’s Church
The St Mary’s church, which according to eyewitnesses was hit by a two-wheeled vehicle, was the target of the two sons. Once arrived at their destination they activated their explosives.
Church of Surabaya
The father, identified as Dita Sopriyanto, went to the Surabaya Church with a car containing explosives. He activated his bomb in front of the church.
According to CNN, he first reportedly took his wife and daughters to Kristen Church and went to the Surabaya Church after they exploded.
Two more bombs were set off by the local demining team.
Although ISIS claimed the attack through its agency Amaq Agency which were defined as « martyrdom attacks», the authorities did not confirm the claim.
So far, ten dead and forty-one wounded including three policemen.
