Sumatra, Indonesia – Terrorist attacks continue to emerge in Indonesia. Wednesday, May 16, 2018, around 9:00 am, another attack, made four dead and a few wounded including police and a journalist. The men were armed with swords.
The attackers first struck a security point at the Sumatra City police station with a car and then attacked the police.
“The car was blocked by the Riau police. They then got out of the car and attacked the police officiers with long swords” said Seytio Wasisto Inspector General and spokesperson for the National Police.
One of the officier present at the security point died in the hospital after being hit by the car. Two other officers suffered wounds sustained by the swords.
There was a fifth person in the car, who fled. It was during this flight that the policeman who died at the hospital was hit by the car. However, said person was captured shortly afterwards by the police.
This is the third attack that took place in Indonesia specifically in Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau province, in the center of the island of Sumatra.
The wave of terrorist and suicidal attacks began last Sunday with the three attacks on three churches by six members of the same family leaving behind twelve dead.
Then another attack followed Monday, when a second family of five attacked the Surabaya police station wounding several policemen. The only survivor, an eight-year-old girl, was taken to the hospital.
The two attacks on Sunday (the three churches) and on Monday (the police station) were attributed to JAD (Jamaah Ansharut Daulah), an Indonesian terrorist group who swore loyalty to the Islamic State.
However, the police did not know who to attribute Wednesday’s attack. That said, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for this attack in a statement through its press organ Amaq.
Tito Karbavian, chief of the National Police, said Wednesday that the police continue their search and arrests of members of the terrorist group JAD. To this end, counter-terrorism forces have already arrested the group leader of the city of Java. Samsul Arif and his wife were arrested in Singosari, a town east of Java. In West Java, in the city of Tangerang, four new recruits have also been arrested.
